1. Developmental

Quality Physical Education is developmental in nature. It recognises that children and young people develop physically, cognitively, socially and emotionally throughout their educational journey and therefore require learning experiences that are age and stage appropriate.

Developmental PE builds progressively upon prior learning, enabling learners to develop movement competence, confidence and understanding through carefully sequenced experiences. Learners are supported to move from basic movement patterns towards increasingly complex and specialised forms of movement.

A developmental approach ensures that challenge is appropriate, progression is meaningful and success is achievable for all learners.

In practice

  • Learning is sequenced, not necessarily related to age, but stage and capability.
  • Activities match developmental readiness.
  • Progression is clearly planned.
  • Success criteria are developmentally appropriate.
  • Teachers adapt learning to individual needs.
